    The Eco Initiatives

    The level of commitment towards the environment can not only be seen in our operations but also in our construction and management practices. The raw materials used at the time of construction are eco-friendly such as cement used is PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) comprising of 15-35 % fly ash content (a by-product from Thermal Power plants), QED wall panels - made from fertilizer waste - have been used as partition rather than red bricks and MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is utilized rather than using natural wood as it helps in controlling deforestation. We have been able to implement sustainable practices and have been successful in training our employees in the said criteria as specified by Envotel Certification since 1st January 1997. We had applied for the Envotel Certification in the year 2009 and had designed our environmental policy as per the sustainable practices followed at the hotel and these principles and ethos were imbibed in our employees. Based on our environment practices followed in day to day activity we were awarded the certification the year 2010.

    To ensure that the environmental practices are in place we have an Environment Department which is headed by the Environment officer to keep a check on the day to day functioning of green team initiatives. The driving force behind this great initiative isDr.Vithal Kamat, Executive Chairman and Managing Director of Kamat Hotels India Limited. A green team comprises of staff members of each department and they follow an annual environment calendar which highlights days which are dedicated to environmental initiatives, beach clean-up drives, Diwali rally etc.

    We follow all environmental laws and regulations applicable    forthe hotel industry. We have different Eco- practices according to the categories mentioned byEnvotelcertification.

    Waste Management
     
    Another feature in our cap was achieving the status of a “zero garbage” hotel. The Orchid has a systematic 4-bin waste segregation system. The wet garbage goes for the vermiculture process for which we have 9 pits on site. The manure from the same is used for our Orchid Gardens. Dry garbage like tins, cans, bottles and paper is sent for recycling through the recycling vendor.

    Water Management
     
    At The Orchid, we believe in the three “R” theory of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Water, being one of the earth's most precious resources, and vital to life we have tried to put this theory in practice by taking special care to conserve this resource by employing carefully planned techniques, which re-establishes our belief in the above theory.

    We also have a Green Team comprising of 20 members who help to implement environment practices in their departments.

    The awareness for the Environment in our team members has reached such a crescendo, that even in their spare time, they go out into localities for a cleanup drive, silent rally various other drives and rallies are organized involving the locals. The Orchid is committed to providing environmental education to children- the future of our society.
